What is your role at Valard Geomatics?

I am an Administrative Clerk dealing primarily with Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.

Before working at Valard Geomatics, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?

Prior to working at Valard Geomatics, I was a Quality Control Analyst for a Biopharmaceutical manufacturing plant. We created active pharmaceutical ingredients, specifically, modified proteins by growing them in bacteria or yeast cultures and processing them until just the protein was present. I monitored the sterility of clean rooms, and provided bio-assay testing for the product every step of the way from beginning to end of manufacture and in some cases through human clinical trials. Working there taught me a lot of interesting things such as properly working with microbial cultures like E.coli and Staphylococcus Aureus, the importance of sterilization and cleaning in an environment like that and impeccable documentation.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us?

My mother, my maternal grandparents, my great-grandparents and perhaps even further back all hail from the lovely island of Jamaica. My mother was incredibly lucky to have grown up in a paradise like that and I myself find in awe that I was able to spend a great deal of time on the island when I was younger visiting my grandmother and other family. As ordinary as it was for me as a child, it took me a long time to realize that not everyone spent quite a few weeks of the year on a gorgeous beach, gorging on ripe mangoes off the trees, running around chasing lizards or even a parent who could utter the words “Ya Mon!” with complete conviction!

Do you have a favorite quote?

Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud. – Maya Angelou
Nothing is impossible. The word itself says “I’m possible!” –Audrey Hepburn
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known. – Carl Sagan
This quote speaks to me as someone from a science background/education. It serves to remind us that we do not know everything in our universe and we should never stop trying to discover new ideas or truths that are within our grasp to learn and know.

What book did you read last?

The last book I read was The White Princess by Phillipa Gregory. It’s a historical fictional novel about King Henry VIII’s parents and the War of the Roses. I love history and Phillipa Gregory’s work gives me a chance to experience it without feeling like I am reading a documentary seen on the History Channel.
